Calathea
Plant Care Tips & Tricks

Calatheas are known for their lush foliage and bold patterning. As part of the prayer plant family, you can expect their leaves to open and close with the time of day. This habit exposes a striking shade of dark purple that many varieties have on the underside of their foliage.
Varieties: Dottie, Leopardina, Little Princess, Makoyana, Orbifolia, Peacock, Pinstripe, Rattlesnake, Red Mojo, Rosy, Royal Standard, Sanguinea, Vittata, Zebrina, Ctenanthe, Burle Marx, Stromanthe, Pink Star
Lighting: These plants enjoy medium to bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun which is likely to cause sunburnt foliage.
Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Allowing soil to slightly dry permits oxygen to reach the roots.
Humidity: Calatheas thrive in an environment with higher moisture levels. You can add humidity around your plant through the use of a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier. Consider placing this plant in a kitchen or bathroom where humidity levels are higher.
Fertilizer: Calatheas only require fertilizer in the spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations.
