Plant Care Tips & Tricks

Bird of Paradise

One of the most popular indoor houseplants, the Bird of Paradise is pleasing to the eye and brings a tropical feel to indoor spaces. Its large, dramatic leaves grow mostly upright and are supported by sturdy stems. If any of the leaves split over time don't be concerned. The leaves of this plant are naturally perforated and have adapted this way to become more aerodynamic in the windy tropics.

Varieties: Bird of Paradise, White Bird of Paradise

Lighting: These plants enjoy lots of bright, indirect sunlight. They can handle some direct sun when acclimated appropriately.

Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Allowing soil to slightly dry permits oxygen to reach the roots.

Humidity: Bird of Paradise plants will adapt to average household humidity but will thrive in an environment with higher moisture levels. You can add humidity around your plant through the use of a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier.

Fertilizer: Feed once a month during the summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package recommendations.
