Plant Care Tips & Tricks

Poinsettia

Poinsettias are the most popular plant for Christmas because of their rich colouring and the warmth they bring to people's homes. The red leaves are often mistaken for flowers because of their groupings and bright colour; however, the flowers on this plant are actually the small yellow structures located in the middle of the red leaves.

Lighting: Locate your plant in a space with bright light. Poinsettias can tolerate direct sunlight during the winter months.

Irrigation: Allow the top of your soil to 'slightly' dry between waterings.
If your poinsettia came in a cheerful mylar pot cover, remove the cover at time of watering. If you choose to leave your pot cover on, just make sure to empty any remaining water from the base of your pot cover. You do not want the roots to get wet feet, ultimately causing root rot.

Fertilizer: We do not recommend fertilizing your poinsettia when it is blooming. You can feed your poinsettia in late spring.

Drafts: Watch for cool drafts. Poinsettias can catch a chill if located next to a door or pushed against a window.
