If you’ve ever wandered through the garden centre and spotted a bundle of twisty green stalks sitting in glass vases and pebble or sand filled containers, you’ve met Lucky Bamboo! This beloved, beginner friendly plant isn’t just easy to care for… it’s packed with symbolism, tradition, and a little bit of whimsy too.
Learn about the meaning behind this thoughtful gift, what makes it a beginner-friendly choice, and take away a few of our grower's care tips.

Gifting Hope
Lucky Bamboo has long been associated with good fortune, positive energy, and thoughtful gifting. In many cultures, giving someone living bamboo is believed to bring blessings and well-wishes, making it a perfect plant for housewarmings, birthdays, new jobs, or just because.
In the case of Lucky Bamboo, the wishes are hidden in the numbers. Gifting someone a certain amount of stalks symbolizes a different wish:
3 Stalks: Happiness
A classic choice that symbolizes joy, balance, and overall happiness.
5 Stalks: Health
Perfect for wishing someone wellness and strength.
7 Stalks: Wealth
Often chosen to attract abundance and financial success.
8 Stalks: Prosperity
A powerful number representing growth, opportunity, and long-term prosperity.
So, when you’re picking out Lucky Bamboo, you’re not just choosing a plant, you’re choosing a message.
Keep It Easy: Care Tips
Lucky Bamboo is one of our top recommendations for anyone wanting an easy, low-maintenance plant that still makes a big impact. It’s perfect for brightening up a desk at work, adding life to a kitchen counter, or trying your hand at plant care for the first time.
Plus… it looks great in just about any space.

Lighting:
Place your plant in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
If you're worried that you don't have enough light, watch for stretching. if your plant leans or reaches towards the light, that's your bamboo trying to tell you it wants a brighter spot.
Irrigation:
Let tap water sit out for 24 hours before using, or opt for distilled water. Lucky Bamboo is sensitive to chemicals found in fresh tap water. If your bamboo is growing in pebbles and water, change the water weekly to keep it fresh and clean.
A bonus perk? Because the container is often clear, it’s easy to see when water levels are getting low, no guessing required!
Pruning:
Lucky Bamboo will benefit from occasional pruning to clean up old growth and maintain it's appearance. Avoid cutting the main stalks and trim back the offshoots instead. Use sterile snippers and trim back to within an inch or two of the original stem.
Shaping:
The unusual shapes of Lucky Bamboo are formed by rotating the stalks in front of a light source (This is the stretching mentioned above). If you want to experiment with your own, try placing the plant in a three sided box and pay close attention to the way it grows. You'll need to turn your plant slowly and regularly to achieve that smooth curve or curl.
Look beyond the name:
Despite being called Lucky Bamboo, this plant is not a true bamboo. If you want something to compare it to, think of Dracaena. Many plants from this genus are loved for the same reasons Lucky Bamboo are.
We receive several shipments of fresh Lucky Bamboo throughout the year, so there’s always something new to discover. Don't worry, this popular plant will have a re-stock if we are sold out, so stop in and see what's available. Whether you’re shopping for a meaningful gift or adding a little positive energy to your own space, your next lucky plant might be waiting for you!
