African Violet Care The African Violet is an elegant plant, loved for its cheerful blooms and somewhat fuzzy foliage. It is a compact, low-growing plant that doesn't require much space to display its showy flowers. As African Violets come in many leaf forms and flower colours, you are sure to find one that suits your decor needs. Lighting: This plant enjoys bright indirect lighting conditions. Direct sun will burn its beautiful flower petals. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Avoid getting the leaves of this plant wet when watering. Humidity: African violets adjust well to average household humidity. We do not recommend using a mister around African violets as it can cause leaf rot. Fertilizer: Feed once a month during the summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package recommendations. Anthurium Care Anthuriums, also known as Laceleaf, are indoor tropical plants with brightly coloured and unique waxy leaves that resemble flowers. They are durable, easy-care plants that give off an exotic and tropical feel. When cared for properly the colourful spikes can last for four to six weeks. Lighting: This plant requires lots of bright, indirect lighting to produce its vibrant colouring. Direct sun may burn the leaves. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Avoid getting the leaves of this plant wet when watering. Humidity: Anthurium will adapt to lower humidity levels but thrive in environments with more moisture. Consider using a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier. Fertilizer: Feed once a month during the summer. Follow package recommendations. Bromeliad Care The term "bromeliad" refers to thousands of species of plants under the Bromeliaceae family. All of the beautiful varieties make you feel like you're in the tropics. This unique, long-lasting house plant adds bright colour and texture to its surrounding space. Bromeliads have thick foliage that grows in a natural rosette. The sword-shaped leaves grow outwards and down around a central "cup", which allows it to collect water in its natural habitat. Varieties: Aechmea, Earth Star, Guzmania, Tillandsia Cyanea, Neoregelia, and more! Lighting: This plant prefers bright indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: Maintain moderately moist soil. Irrigate when the topsoil is dry to the touch. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow the roots of your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: Bromeliads thrive in an environment with higher moisture levels. You can increase humidity by using a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier. Fertilizer: Feed once a month in the spring and summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package instructions. Calla Lily Care The distinctive flowers on a Calla Lily plant come in many colours and are accompanied by smooth, sword-like foliage. Whether in a garden, decorative pot, or vase, the Calla Lily is always elegant and impressive. Lighting: Indirect bright light is best. Direct sun will burn this plant. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: Calla Lilies will appreciate extra moisture from the use of a pebble tray or humidifier. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Citrus Fruiting Tree Care Each spring we bring in a wide assortment of exotic fruiting trees. All of these varieties are tropical fruit, they are not winter hardy. They will enjoy the outdoors during the summer season, but will need to come inside for our cool Canadian fall, winter and spring seasons. Varieties: Can vary from year to year but past varieties have included avocado, Barbados cherry, black pepper, cashew, guava, jackfruit, miracle fruit, olive, pomegranate, sugar apple. Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Coconut Palm Care Bring a tropical vibe to your space with our potted coconut palms. With their elegant, arching fronds and classic palm silhouette, these plants instantly evoke a sense of paradise. Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: Maintain a high humidity level around the plant. Consider misting the fronds or using a humidifier to keep the environment tropical. Crown of Thorns Care Euphorbia Milii, aka Crown of Thorns is a beautiful variety of succulent. The vibrant green leaves and showy, reddish-pink bracts are a perfect contrast to the plant's spiny stems. Just like other succulents, this plant can store water and is therefore very forgiving in terms of care requirements. Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Allow the soil to mostly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: Crown of Thorns doesn't require added humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Curcuma Care Curcuma is a tropical plant belonging to the ginger family, though it’s not edible. It has lengthy stems, adorned with lance-shaped foliage and elegant summer blooms in shades of pinkish-purple. Lighting: This plant requires a lot of bright, indirect sunlight to produce maximum blooms; however, avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. You can reduce watering in Fall and Winter. Humidity: This will appreciate extra humidity when it is in bloom. Consider using a pebble tray, humidifier, or occasional misting. Cyclamen Care With interesting flowers showcasing beautiful swept-back petals and leaves with intricate silver patterns, Cyclamen are a staple houseplant for winter. These Mediterranean plants are known for going dormant in the summer, losing their flowers and leaves, but don't fret, because once the cooler days of Autumn return the plant will put out new shoots. Lighting: This plant requires a lot of bright sunlight to produce maximum blooms; however, avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: When in bloom keep the soil moist. Reduce watering schedule in the Summer when the plant is dormant. Humidity: Cyclamen will appreciate extra humidity when it is in bloom. Consider using a pebble tray, humidifier, or occasional misting. Ginseng Ficus Bonsai Care The Ficus Ginseng is known to bring good luck and harmony to those who own one and when received as a gift it is said to bring double the luck. Ginseng Ficus are miniature bonsai trees with aerial roots and oval-shaped leaves that create a lush canopy of green. It is striking in appearance and a more forgiving variety of bonsai, making it ideal for beginners. Lighting: Medium to bright, indirect sunlight is preferred. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Gerbera Daisy Care Commonly known for their bright and cheerful flowers, Gerbera Daisies are attention getters with long-lasting blooms. Popular for their vibrant colours and versatility, Gerbera Daisies are sold as cut flowers, indoor plants, or outdoor garden plants for the Spring and Summer seasons. Add additional colour and beauty to your stay-green plant collection with these delightful flowers. Lighting: Lots of bright, indirect sunlight is preferred. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Try to avoid getting water on the stem or petals. Goldfish Care Goldfish plants have thick, shiny leaves and vibrant orange flowers that resemble tiny goldfish. As they mature, their trailing stems will cascade down the sides of a pot, creating a pleasing display. Expect most blooms from Summer through Autumn. Lighting: This plant requires a lot of bright sunlight to produce maximum blooms; however, avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Allowing soil to slightly dry permits oxygen to reach the roots. Italian Fig Care Did you know that our original Italian fig tree cuttings were taken from our founder, Alex Colasanti? Alex used to grow white honey and brown fig trees in his backyard. This fig tree bears edible fruit from July to September and will start to lose its leaves in November in the cold weather. Your Italian Fig can be kept in a pot or planted in the ground, just make sure it is placed somewhere it will receive plenty of sunlight. The roots of this plant are not winter hardy. This crop is typically ready in spring and is available while supplies last. Irrigation: During the growing season maintain evenly moist, not soggy soil. Increased sun exposure and temperature will also increase the frequency of watering. Juniper Bonsai Care Recognized as one of the most popular types of bonsai, Juniper has been a favorite of many bonsai enthusiasts for its impressive appearance. It’s great for beginners, too, since it’s easy to care for and won’t mind if you pay a little attention. Depending on the type of Juniper Bonsai, the leaves can either be scale-like or needle-like. Its small form, combined with lush greenery, adds a dramatic display to your space. Lighting: We recommend a space that provides high light. Temperature: Your plant will appreciate cool temperatures in the winter. The temperatures will put the plant into a semi dormant state. Irrigation: Keep your soil moist. Junipers do not like to go dry between waterings. You do not want your plant sitting in a puddle of water this will cause root rot. After watering your plant make sure that you dump any excess water from it’s tray. Fertilizer: Growing season is in the spring and summer months. Your plant will not require fertilizer during the cold months. Kalanchoe Care If you're interested in a low-maintenance plant with bright, long-lasting flowers, then look no further than the Kalanchoe! This unique succulent, also known as Calandivas, produces clusters of small flowers in a variety of colours including red, orange, yellow, pink and white. While your Kalanchoe isn't in bloom, you can still enjoy its wide serrated leaves. A perfect choice for beginners and travellers alike, this plant stores water in its leaves. Lighting: Kalanchoes prefer lots of bright light. They will be happy in full sun or bright, indirect light. Irrigation: This plant is a succulent so it's best to allow the soil surface to dry between waterings. Humidity: Kalanchoes do not require added humidity. Fertilizer: This plant doesn't require fertilizer as part of its regular care routine. Lipstick Plant Care This easy-to-care-for vining plant has tubular scarlet flowers atop a lush green backdrop of foliage. It might look high-maintenance, but follow some basic care instructions and it will grace your indoor spaces with its hearty growth and colourful blooms for years to come. Varieties: Twister, Black Pagoda, Mona Lisa, Lighting: Bright light is important to promote the growth of its beautiful blooms but keep out of direct sunlight. Irrigation: Overwatering of lipstick plants can lead to root rot so while they appreciate consistent moisture, allow the top couple of inches of soil to dry between thorough waterings. Fertilizer: Regular applications of a slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (Spring and Summer). Mini Roses Care Bigger isn't always better, and these mini roses are here to prove that. Selectively bred to stay a small size, the miniature blooms on this classic plant add a touch of charm to any space. Lighting: This plant has high light requirements and prefers full sun in order to produce its beautiful blooms. Irrigation: Allow soil to partially dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Fertilizer: Use during the growing season- spring, summer, and early autumn. Follow package directions. Orchid Care Orchids are known for their exotic flair and beautiful blooms that come in different colours and sizes. A wide range of orchid types are available, and most of them exhibit similar characteristics. Orchid flowers have three petals and three sepals. They also have a lip and a waxy tube-like structure called a column. With their vivid and unique flowers, orchids are a sure way to add colour to your home or office. Varieties: Phalaenopsis and Dendrobiums are common varieties of orchid that we carry. We bring in a wide variety of more specialty orchids throughout the year. Lighting: This plant needs filtered or dappled sunlight. Place it in a well-lit room with windows, away from direct light. A sunny window with sheer curtains is also a good idea. Irrigation: Soak the growing medium (bark) for 5-10 minutes and then thoroughly drain any excess water. Once the roots of your plant turn white/grey, the orchid is ready to be watered again. This should happen every week or two. Humidity: Orchids can adapt to lower humidity levels but will thrive in an environment with more moisture. You can add humidity around your plant by using a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier. Consider placing this plant in a kitchen or bathroom where humidity levels are higher. Fertilizer: Use an orchid-specific fertilizer that is specially formulated for the needs of these plants. Peace Lily Care Peace Lily is a classic ornamental plant and a long-time favourite of many plant hobbyists and collectors. While its flowers remind you of calla lilies, this famed air cleaning plant is not a true lily since it’s actually a part of the Arum family. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and lance-shaped with an arching growth habit. Varieties: Domino, Peace Lily Lighting: Peace lilies will tolerate low to medium, indirect sunlight; however, they will grow best in indirect, bright light. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. No need to worry if you fall behind on your watering schedule. This plant will let you know with its droopy leaves Humidity: This plant appreciates a boost in humidity through the use of a humidifier, pebble tray, or occasional misting. Fertilizer: Feed once a month during the summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package recommendations. Pineapple Plant Care Ananas comosus, or Pineapple plant, is shallow-rooted with thick spiny leaves and striking flowers that are followed by fruit. In the summer you can put your pineapple plant outside. During autumn, winter and early spring your plant will need to stay indoors in a warm environment. Lighting: This plant thrives in full sun. Provide at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best blooming and growth. Irrigation: Water when the topsoil is dry to the touch. Pitcher Plant Care Native to bog and swamp areas, Pitcher plants developed adaptations to supplement their nutritional requirements in poor soil conditions. They flaunt eye-catching, fleshy funnels or pitcher-like tubes. These elongated pitchers are specialized leaves that trap insects for consumption. Lighting: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and pitchers. If growing indoors, a south or east-facing window with filtered light is ideal. In winter, supplemental lighting may help maintain pitcher production. Irrigation: Use only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Pitchers dry out quickly if the soil is too dry, but saturated roots can suffocate. Water from the top or bottom, and misting can help boost humidity. Temperature & Humidity: These plants love humidity (60–80%) and prefer consistent temperatures. Ideal daytime temps are 68–70°F (20–21°C), with cooler nights around 66–68°F (19–20°C). Avoid exposing them to temps below 59°F (15°C) or above 86°F (30°C). Fertilizing: Pitcher plants generally don’t need fertilizer, especially if they catch insects. However, a very diluted fertilizer (like a 20-20-20 mix) can be applied once every two weeks during active growth. Use sparingly—these plants are adapted to nutrient-poor environments. If fertilizing, rinse leaves lightly to avoid buildup. Plumeria Care Plumeria is a plant that resembles a small shrub or tree. They flower from early summer to fall, so they’re just getting started for the year! Even without the little flower clusters, the shape of these plants and their delicate looking leaves give them a unique aesthetic. Lighting: Plumeria thrive in full sun. Provide at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best blooming and growth. Irrigation: Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure the soil drains well, as Plumeria do not like soggy conditions. During winter dormancy, reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil to mostly dry between waterings. Humidity: Medium to high humidity is ideal. Consider placing the plant on a pebble tray or using a room humidifier. Poinsettia Care (Winter) Poinsettias are the most popular plant for Christmas because of their rich colouring and the warmth they bring to people's homes. The red leaves are often mistaken for flowers because of their groupings and bright colour; however, the flowers on this plant are actually the small yellow structures located in the middle of the red leaves. Lighting: Locate your plant in a space with bright light. Poinsettias can tolerate direct sunlight during the winter months. Irrigation: Allow the top of your soil to 'slightly' dry between waterings. If your poinsettia came in a cheerful mylar pot cover, remove the cover at time of watering. If you choose to leave your pot cover on, just make sure to empty any remaining water from the base of your pot cover. You do not want the roots to get wet feet, ultimately causing root rot. Fertilizer: We do not recommend fertilizing your poinsettia when it is blooming. You can feed your poinsettia in late spring. Drafts: Watch for cool drafts. Poinsettias can catch a chill if located next to a door or pushed against a window. Scindapsus Treubii Moonlight Care This stunning tropical plant effortlessly enhances any space with its distinctive silvery sheen. Its long, heart-shaped leaves shimmer with a moonlit glow, elegantly displayed on robust, trailing vines. Lighting: This plant prefers indirect, bright sunlight. Direct sun can burn their foliage. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: This plant will adapt to average household humidity levels but prefers added humidity from a pebble tray or humidifier. Fertilizer: Feed once a month in the spring and summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package instructions. Venus Fly Trap Lighting: Venus Fly traps prefer high-light locations. A bright window facing South, West, or East where they will receive direct sun is ideal. If your VFT doesn’t receive enough bright light it will go dormant. Artificial lighting will allow plants to grow during the winter months. Artificial lighting should not exceed 500 w/m2 at leaf level. Irrigation: Keep growing medium moist at all times. Venus fly traps are bog plants. If allowed to dry they will go dormant. Water quality is most important to Venus Fly Traps. They like chemical-free water. Tap water must sit for 24 to 48 hours before it can be used for irrigation. Charcoal-filtered water (Brita or similar), Reverse Osmosis, rain water and distilled water are all good. Humidity: These plants thrive in an environment with higher moisture levels. You can add humidity around your plant by using a mister, pebble tray, or humidifier. Consider placing this plant in a kitchen or bathroom where humidity levels are higher. Fertilizer: A drop of fertilizer in the soil monthly during the spring summer months is recommended if not able to have access to insects. When it comes to fertilizer more is not better for your Venus fly trap. High salts will kill your Venus fly trap. Temperature: They grow best in the spring and summer months. Normal room temperature 20c to 21c. If allowed to cool, they will go dormant.
