- Plant Care | Succulents & Cacti | Colasanti's
Some of our teams tips for our most popular succulent plants, including jade, sansevieria, string of pearls, zz plants, and cacti. Aloe Vera Care One of the most forgiving and beginner-friendly houseplants you can find is an Aloe Vera. It has gained popularity for its striking leaves, health benefits, and air-purifying ability. The leaves of this short-stemmed succulent are thick and fleshy, with some varieties exhibiting white specks on the surface and serrated margins. Lighting: Aloe prefers medium to high light conditions and will grow best in sunny spots where it can receive filtered or direct sunlight. It makes the perfect plant for any well-lit room in your house. Irrigation: Allow soil to fully dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: Aloe plants do not require additional humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Burro's Tail Care Burro's tail is an eye-catching, flowering succulent. Its lush, textured exterior grows into long sweeping stems with fleshy leaves. It's a hardy plant in terms of care requirements but is somewhat physically fragile. Leaves are known to drop when being handled; however, try putting those fallen leaves back in the pot. They might grow into new stems. Lighting: Burro's Tail likes lots of sun but not intense heat. Place it in an area where it can receive direct morning sun or indirect afternoon sun. Irrigation: Allow soil to fully dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month in summer is good. Once every two months during Fall, Winter, and Spring. Any house plant food will work well. Cactus Care Cacti are stress-free plants with minimal care requirements. These plants store water in their green, photosynthetic, and cylindrical or flattened stems. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, so you have plenty of choices! Give them the right care, and these prickly plants will show you beautiful flowers. Varieties: Bishop's Cap, Euphorbia Cactus, Coral Cactus, Golden Barrel, Moon Cactus, Fairy Castle, Blue Columnar Cactus, Bunny Ears Cactus, Feather Cactus, Bishop's Cap, Lady Finger Cactus, and many more! Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Low water plants only need watering once a week or once every two weeks. Allow the soil to dry completely before the next watering. Humidity: Cacti don't require added humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Crown of Thorns Care Euphorbia Milii, aka Crown of Thorns is a beautiful variety of succulent. The vibrant green leaves and showy, reddish-pink bracts are a perfect contrast to the plant's spiny stems. Just like other succulents, this plant can store water and is therefore very forgiving in terms of care requirements. Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: Crown of Thorns doesn't require added humidity. They prefer a dry environment Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Elephant Bush Care The Elephant Bush grows like a shrub with branches that sprout small, round leaves (I’m sure you can see how this plant got its name). Over time, this plant has become a houseplant staple because of its slow growing nature. This is also one of the things that makes it a great choice for bonsai cultivation. Lighting: Lots of access to bright, indirect sunlight for 5-6 hours a day. Irrigation: Hold off on watering this little plant until the top few inches of soil are dry. It's a succulent, so you’ll want to water deeply and thoroughly, just on occasion. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Fishbone Cactus Care An easy to care for plant with a ton of personality, the Fishbone cactus is a great option for all levels of green thumbs. They look stunning in hanging baskets as they grow larger and start to trail! Lighting: Indirect, bright sunlight is best. Irrigation: As a jungle cactus, your plant is going to need to be watered more often than its desert cousins. Water when the top few inches of soil are dry. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Hens & Chicks Care Hens and chicks are succulent plants, part of the Sempervivum group. They get their name because of their habit of propagating new baby plants. Hens & Chicks are incredibly easy-to-grow plants with a tolerance for poor soil and unwelcoming conditions. They are a winter-hardy perennial which means you can pant them in the ground and they will come back each Spring. Hens and Chicks come in a variety of textures and colours. Lighting: Sempervivum requires medium to high light and will grow best in sunny spots where it can receive filtered or direct sunlight. It makes the perfect plant for any well-lit room in your house. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. Jade Care Jade Plants, also known as Lucky Plants or Friendship Plants, are beautiful and easy to care for. They are often given as gifts as they are thought to bring good luck to their owners. Jades are succulent plants, which makes them resilient and easy to grow indoors. They have dense formations of thick, waxy leaves and woody stems that can resemble miniature trees. If they receive an abundance of light, the plant takes on a bright red border around its vibrant, green leaves. It's always best to under water vs. over water. Humidity: Lithops don't require additional humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Ponytail Palm Care Also Known as "Elephants Foot" or "Bottle Palm" the Ponytail Palm is recognized for its elegant bulb-like trunk and an abundance of long, curling leaves. Avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: The ponytail palm requires less frequent waterings because of its succulent stem. Allow the soil to mostly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: This plant doesn't require added humidity. Rhipsalis Care Rhipsalis is unlike most cacti because it naturally grows in tropical rainforests, not deserts. - Dieffenbachia | Colasanti
< Back Dieffenbachia Plant Care Tips & Tricks Dieffenbachia are tropical foliage plants that are loved for their lush leaves and variety of unique patterning. They are forgiving plants with low-maintenance care requirements making them ideal for new plant parents. Varieties: Tropic Snow, Camo Panther, Reflector, Camille, Splash Lighting: These plants enjoy medium to bright, indirect sunlight. The less sun they receive, the slower they will grow. Avoid direct sun which is likely to cause sunburnt foliage. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Allowing soil to slightly dry permits oxygen to reach the roots. Humidity: Dieffenbachia do well in average household humidity. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer using a balanced fertilizer. Follow package recommendations. Previous Next
