  • Our Story | Colasanti's Tropical Gardens | Kingsville

Colasanti's started in 1942, producing vegetables and greenhouse crops. Get the whole story here. 1942 Colasanti's begins! Producing vegetables and greenhouse crops. Our retail business was a small fruit stand. 1955 Expansion started to pick up speed. We started to produce new crops: lemons and orange trees. 1972 A new specialty takes root: cacti and succulents! Today The farm is situated on over 35 acres, 3.5 of which is indoors, in Ruthven Ontario. Our Story Grandpa Colasanti, as thousands knew him, was born Aleutario Colasanti on October 15, 1902 in Ceprano, Italy. His mother was Angela and his Father was Guiseppe. Sixth born of seven children, he lived in this Italian community for 22 years. The very poor living conditions, however, drove him to explore opportunities he had heard of from relatives in Detroit, Michigan. Unfortunately, immigration to the U.S.A. had been curtailed and he was told that Windsor, Ontario was close and had expanding opportunities as well. In 1924 he recruited enough bond money as was required by the Canadian Federal Government and boarded a ship that would sail for 23 days to dock in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was here that Alex learned about the Town of Kingsville and decided that this would be the location where he would try to start a new life. In 1927, together with his friend Armand Mastronardi, they saved $75.00 to buy a Model T. This gave the two men the ability to socialize. Alex could now travel to Detroit to visit his brother and cousin. Struggles to overcome a variety of hardships only fueled his desire to work harder and succeed. Although he was neither settled nor established, Alex would routinely send money back to his mother in Ceprano. In 1930, he returned to Italy. Conditions had not changed and 3 months later he returned to his new homeland. The 29 year old pioneer rented a house with his brothers and sharecropped for some time. On one fateful trip to Detroit, Alex met Emma Colagiavanni. The two fell in love and decided to elope on March 29, 1932. Emma adapted well to her new home country and was soon planting tomatoes with her pioneer husband. Although they were hard at work on the farm, Emma and Alex were excited about starting a family together. Their firstborn Joe arrived in 1933, Ron was born in 1935, and Alex Jr. (Sonny) in 1940. The couple showed tremendous resiliency and work ethic during these years. They managed to save enough money to put a down payment on a small farm in 1941. It was two years later that Emma and Alex managed to pay off the mortgage for what is now Colasanti Farms. After the Second World War and into the mid 40’s, Emma and Alex became very active in sponsoring other Italian immigrants. Alex would find jobs and housing for the 200 to 300 individuals that they had sponsored. His hope was that they would have an easier start than he did. In 1945 Alex built his first greenhouse and would soon be growing crops into the winter. He did so well farming that season that he purchased an additional 13 acres of land and built a second greenhouse. In 1948 a baby girl, Anna Marie, was born to the elated Alex and Emma. Alex’s life was filled with trial and triumph but his belief that members of the community could work cooperatively never wavered. His efforts to coordinate with people were instrumental in the initiation of institutions such as the Roma Club, and the Sun Parlor CO-OP. The hard work and generosity of Emma and Alex gained them many friendships within the area. These friendships were an important part of their lives. Guests would routinely gather for Sunday pasta and meatballs, the annual snail feast, or to eat fresh figs and grapefruit from the original hobby greenhouse. Sundays in the Summer were spent playing Bocce Ball on the farm. In the Winter, rabbit hunting was another gathering of friends. This close-knit group of friends showed their sense of community on a cold December day in the late 40s when a mishap took place on Emma and Alex's farm. The boiler room went up in flames. Neighbours and friends jumped into action. Not only did they help save the crop, but they also helped rebuild the boiler room in just 2 days. Alex always had his hands in the soil. He gardened in the greenhouse in the early spring, and outside all summer. If he wasn’t busy in the garden or the fruit market, he would weave a basket or two. In 1975 Alex’s wife Emma suddenly died. Life would change for Alex, but he never let a day go by that he didn’t contribute to the benefit of others. He became more and more active in his later years weaving baskets from the branches of willow trees on the farm. There was no one more important in Alex’s life than his family; especially his grandchildren, their spouses, and all the great-grandchildren that he adored. There was never a time that his eyes didn’t light up in the presence of the kids, right up until his very last days. Alex died at 10:30 pm on November 6, 1998, in his hospital room which was filled by his sons, daughter, their spouses and his grandchildren around his side. He left this world knowing he had done well. He has instilled a work ethic into his children that has become a big part of their success. His memory lives on as an inspiration to his family and friends. We all give him thanks for these gifts that he has left all of us.

  • Plant Care | Succulents & Cacti | Colasanti's

Some of our teams tips for our most popular succulent plants, including jade, sansevieria, string of pearls, zz plants, and cacti. Aloe Vera Care One of the most forgiving and beginner-friendly houseplants you can find is an Aloe Vera. It has gained popularity for its striking leaves, health benefits, and air-purifying ability. The leaves of this short-stemmed succulent are thick and fleshy, with some varieties exhibiting white specks on the surface and serrated margins. Lighting: Aloe prefers medium to high light conditions and will grow best in sunny spots where it can receive filtered or direct sunlight. It makes the perfect plant for any well-lit room in your house. Irrigation: Allow soil to fully dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: Aloe plants do not require additional humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Burro's Tail Care Burro's tail is an eye-catching, flowering succulent. Its lush, textured exterior grows into long sweeping stems with fleshy leaves. It's a hardy plant in terms of care requirements but is somewhat physically fragile. Leaves are known to drop when being handled; however, try putting those fallen leaves back in the pot. They might grow into new stems. Lighting: Burro's Tail likes lots of sun but not intense heat. Place it in an area where it can receive direct morning sun or indirect afternoon sun. Irrigation: Allow soil to fully dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month in summer is good. Once every two months during Fall, Winter, and Spring. Any house plant food will work well. Cactus Care Cacti are stress-free plants with minimal care requirements. These plants store water in their green, photosynthetic, and cylindrical or flattened stems. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, so you have plenty of choices! Give them the right care, and these prickly plants will show you beautiful flowers. Varieties: Bishop's Cap, Euphorbia Cactus, Coral Cactus, Golden Barrel, Moon Cactus, Fairy Castle, Blue Columnar Cactus, Bunny Ears Cactus, Feather Cactus, Bishop's Cap, Lady Finger Cactus, and many more! Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Low water plants only need watering once a week or once every two weeks. Allow the soil to dry completely before the next watering. Humidity: Cacti don't require added humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Crown of Thorns Care Euphorbia Milii, aka Crown of Thorns is a beautiful variety of succulent. The vibrant green leaves and showy, reddish-pink bracts are a perfect contrast to the plant's spiny stems. Just like other succulents, this plant can store water and is therefore very forgiving in terms of care requirements. Lighting: High light plants require full sunlight to assume their full potential. They need at least 6 hours of direct, bright light a day. The brightest spot in your home is the best place to put them. Irrigation: Allow the soil to slightly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: Crown of Thorns doesn't require added humidity. They prefer a dry environment Fertilizer: Once a month during spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer and follow package recommendations. Elephant Bush Care The Elephant Bush grows like a shrub with branches that sprout small, round leaves (I’m sure you can see how this plant got its name). Over time, this plant has become a houseplant staple because of its slow growing nature. This is also one of the things that makes it a great choice for bonsai cultivation. Lighting: Lots of access to bright, indirect sunlight for 5-6 hours a day. Irrigation: Hold off on watering this little plant until the top few inches of soil are dry. It's a succulent, so you’ll want to water deeply and thoroughly, just on occasion. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Fishbone Cactus Care An easy to care for plant with a ton of personality, the Fishbone cactus is a great option for all levels of green thumbs. They look stunning in hanging baskets as they grow larger and start to trail! Lighting: Indirect, bright sunlight is best. Irrigation: As a jungle cactus, your plant is going to need to be watered more often than its desert cousins. Water when the top few inches of soil are dry. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. It prefers a dry environment. Hens & Chicks Care Hens and chicks are succulent plants, part of the Sempervivum group. They get their name because of their habit of propagating new baby plants. Hens & Chicks are incredibly easy-to-grow plants with a tolerance for poor soil and unwelcoming conditions. They are a winter-hardy perennial which means you can pant them in the ground and they will come back each Spring. Hens and Chicks come in a variety of textures and colours. Lighting: Sempervivum requires medium to high light and will grow best in sunny spots where it can receive filtered or direct sunlight. Humidity: This plant does not require added humidity. Jade Care Jade Plants, also known as Lucky Plants or Friendship Plants, are beautiful and easy to care for. They are often given as gifts as they are thought to bring good luck to their owners. Jades are succulent plants, which makes them resilient and easy to grow indoors. They have dense formations of thick, waxy leaves and woody stems that can resemble miniature trees. If they receive an abundance of light, the plant takes on a bright red border around its vibrant, green leaves. Varieties: Ovata Horntree Jade, Variegated Jade, Green Lighting: Plants that require medium to high light will grow best in sunny spots where they can receive filtered or direct sunlight. They make the perfect plants for any well-lit room in your house. Irrigation: Allow the soil to mostly dry between thorough irrigations. Water until liquid runs from drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and discard excess water. Do not allow your plant to sit in standing water as it will lead to root rot. Humidity: Jade plants do not require additional humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Fertilizer: Regular applications of a slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (Spring and Summer). Lithops Care Lithops are a type of succulent with an especially interesting form. A favourite of many succulent collectors, this slow-growing miniature plant can disguise as a rock at first look! Because of its one-of-a-kind appearance, it has earned it the nickname Living Stones. You’ll find them in fun colours and patterns that vary depending on the variety. Give this plant the right care and it will send up a beautiful large, shiny flower in yellow, white, or pink. Lighting: Lithops can sunburn, so avoid a location with direct afternoon rays. They will enjoy morning sunlight. Irrigation: Allow your plant to completely dry between waterings. This variety stores water in its fleshy leaves for several weeks at a time. It's always best to under water vs. over water. Humidity: Lithops don't require additional humidity. They prefer a dry environment. Ponytail Palm Care Also Known as "Elephants Foot" or "Bottle Palm" the Ponytail Palm is recognized for its elegant bulb-like trunk and an abundance of long, curling leaves. Despite its name, the Ponytail Palm is not part of the palm family and is in fact a succulent. It's the perfect plant for a busy plant parent. Lighting: This plant prefers bright indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun as it can burn the foliage. Irrigation: The ponytail palm requires less frequent waterings because of its succulent stem. Allow the soil to mostly dry between thorough irrigations. Humidity: This plant doesn't require added humidity. Rhipsalis Care Rhipsalis is unlike most cacti because it naturally grows in tropical rainforests, not deserts. This explains why its care requirements are so different from other cacti; however, it is still a very hardy plant that requires little maintenance. Lighting: This plant prefers indirect, bright sunlight. Irrigation: Allow the soil to partially dry between thorough irrigations. It can be sensitive to overwatering but doesn't like to completely dry like other cacti species. Fertilizer: Once a month in summer is good. Once every two months during Fall, Winter, and Spring.
